To some, chess may only look like a quiet game of intellect and honor, but it has long been part of a much bigger geopolitical battle. From the Soviet era to the modern Russian Federation, the Kremlin has always used chess as a tool of prestige, influence, and soft power. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union invested significant resources into the game, turning chess champions into symbols of intellectual and ideological superiority as well as national pride. That legacy carried into modern Russia, where the country has maintained significant influence within global chess institutions. However, the political dimension and meaning of the game has become increasingly visible. After Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the global chess world faced difficult decisions and a raising question: is chess simply a universal game of intellect, or another arena of politics?

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has affected the country’s political system. Due to the efforts of the STF and the Superior Electoral Court to combat disinformation and protect Brazil’s democratic processes, free speech issues have emerged. As a result of the broad powers the STF received through the Constitution and the current political climate, the other branches of government have become subservient to the judicial branch, creating legitimacy issues. Some argue that the courts protect democratic institutions and prevent the rise of extremism, and that without intervention Lula’s alleged corruption scandals and Bolsonaro’s insurrection would have had a dramatic impact on Brazil’s future. Others claim the courts have overstepped when limiting freedom of expression. However, the judicial powers are not free of blame for the corruption still present in Brazil, as they have undermined the democratic separation of powers with little accountability. Brazil’s Judicial Branch should protect democratic institutions and processes without infringing upon citizens’ rights or the roles of other branches of government in order to maintain democracy and justice.

Flight MH17, travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was cut short at an altitude of ten kilometres. 298 people never made it back home, to their holidays, to their meetings, or simply their futures. Among them were families with children, scientists on their way to conferences, newlyweds, and travelers returning from their journeys. A routine passenger flight crossed the line of war. In an instant, the sky, meant for peaceful journeys, became part of an armed conflict and leaving lives lost and unfulfilled destinies. Across distant fields, the silence of the tragedy spoke louder than any words could, and the world was forced to confront the fragility of life and the far-reaching shadow of conflict. The China–Taiwan conflict is often described as one of the world’s most sensitive flashpoints, but headlines rarely explain why. Behind today’s military tensions lies a century of political upheaval, competing national identities, and two governments claiming to be the true heir of China’s past. After the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the Communist Party established the People’s Republic of China on the mainland, while the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan and continued as the Republic of China. Since then, both sides have developed in completely different directions: the PRC into a one-party state, Taiwan into a democracy with its own identity shaped by generations who no longer see themselves as Chinese. As the United States increases support for Taiwan’s self-defence and Japan positions missiles near the island, regional tensions continue to rise.

From the Gothic courtyards of Collegium Maius to the energy of Juwenalia, traditions shaped centuries ago still define the academic identity of today’s students. Jagiellonian University’s ceremonies, symbols, and rituals remind us that we belong to one of Europe’s oldest centres of learning, while Kraków’s cafés, clubs, and student associations continue the spirit of the wandering “żak”. Even those studying far from the historic centre are part of this living heritage, connected through shared festivals, mottos, and academic culture. While the academic traditions of Kraków may seem dated and old-fashioned, it is important that current students are aware of the long academic lineage they are a part of.

Even in the daylight you can never walk and feel safe,” says Arely Sada Villalobos, female Mexican student at the Jagiellonian University. In Mexico, the issue of femicide, the murder of women for the reason of their gender, has become an indisputable crisis. Everyday, between 9 to 10 women are murdered, and most cases go uninvestigated, unsolved and unpunished. Most scholarly debate ties the crisis to the deep-seated Latin American culture of machismo, creating a society that emphasizes the supremacy of men over women and normalizes male entitlement over female bodies. When examined through the lens of Achille Mbembe’s concept of necropolitics, femicides may be viewed as a necropolitical statement, signalling to women that their lives are insignificant, and intensifying their compliance to men.

The U.S. has a fifty million dollar bounty on Maduro, accusing him of running the ‘Cartel of the Suns’. Maduro calls the move an ‘imperial threat’, declaring an ultimatum to mobilizize 200,000 troops and securing Russian military aid in response. This military escalation plays out against a devastating humanitarian crisis. Venezuela’s economy has collapsed, leaving millions in poverty. The next move is seemingly impossible to predict. Will this lead to direct intervention? Or can diplomacy avert a full-scale catastrophe?
